About the Competition
Localizing the root cause of network faults is crucial to network operation and maintenance. Significant operational expenses will be saved if the root cause can be identified agilely and accurately. However, this is challenging for human beings due to the complicated wireless environments and network architectures. Resorting to data analysis and machine learning is promising but remains difficult due to various practical difficulties, such as the lack of well-labeled samples, hybrid fault behaviors, missing data, and so on. The overall target of this competition is to help people better understand the root cause localization problem and open up new paths for the next-generation wireless networks empowered by causal inference techniques.
We provide a novel real-world telecommunication dataset collected from live 5G networks, together with the associated causal graph endorsed by human experts. Various practical problems were born with this…

The speaker on November 26 is Prof. Rui HUANG of SSE. The following is the detailed information about the seminar.
Topic
Visual Computing on Campus
Abstract
Vision is our dominant sense, and visual computing is one of the most active fields in artificial intelligence research. In this talk, I will introduce you to the various visual computing concepts, and show you some of our latest progress in the field, especially the applications to improve our campus life at CUHKSZ. These include: first, an intelligent video editing system that can automatically generate video lectures from multiple video sources to improve your online learning experience; second, a live virtual touring system that allows you to visit our campus in real time through others’ eyes but at your own free will; and finally, a set of technologies deployed in the autonomous driving cars cruising through our campus…

Why Gauss’ Gold is Langlands’ Triviality
Abstract
In the late 18th Century, Gauss proved the Theorem of Quadratic Reciprocity, which he called Theorema Aureum (the Golden Theorem). In this talk, we review the theorem of Gauss using middle school mathematics, and put it under the perspective of the Langlands program - one of the center stages of research in contemporary mathematics. As a consequence, the Gold in Gauss' eyes is just next to the most trivial case of Langlands program.
Throughout the talk, we will mention its relation with the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem (unproved for 300+ years, until Wiles gave a proof in 1995), along with two of the seven Millennium Problems stated by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000 - the Riemann Hypothesis (…

Title
Mathematical modelling and numerical computations for fluid problems arising from industry and engineering
Abstract
The motion of liquid jets and droplets are fundamental phenomena in many industrial applications such as fiber spinning and inkjet printing. In this talk, I will first discuss the stretching a viscous thread subject to non-isothermal effects. The minimum stretching force to get pinch-off for the thread is determined and the effects of non-isothermal condition are examined. Secondly, the stability of two-phase viscoelastic liquid jets is analyzed. It shows that the presence of the outer fluid produces more secondary droplets in the well-known beads-on-a-string structure. Finally, if time allows, I will also talk about the numerical methods for solving Poisson-Nernst-Planck system and related models.

Title
Can One Hear the Shape of a Drum?
Abstract
The title of this talk was a question praised by Lipman Bers and then made famous by Marc Kac's 1966 expository article. The problem here is to determine whether two domains are congruent if they have the same vibration frequencies (i.e., the spectrum of the Laplacian). It turns out that the answer is negative for general plane domains. However, one can still obtain information about a geometric shape from its frequencies. This problem raises the research area of spectral geometry that is closely related to the index theory, and it yields fruitful results in analysis, geometry, topology, and probability. In this talk, we shall describe, though very briefly, the attempts and results around this topic. We shall outline the contributions of Euler, Gauss, Bonnet, Chern, Weyl, Atiyah, Singer, Patodi, among many others. If time allows, we will…

Network Communications: An Information-Theoretic Perspective
Abstract
Communication networks, especially the Internet, have played a fundamental role in the development of information technologies, and changed our social life significantly. The core functions of the Internet are specified by TCP/IP, a protocol stack that enables the prosperity of the Internet. In this lecture, we first discuss the basic principles and mechanisms of TCP/IP that have been used for half a century and still dominate the network communication practice. By understanding the assumptions under which TCP/IP works well, we highlight the intrinsic limitations of TCP/IP that prevent it from achieving the desired performance in the age of Internet of Things (IoT). We then introduce an information-theoretic approach for network communications developed in the past twenty years, called network coding. Based on an…

Ultrasmall semiconductor lasers for dense integration
Abstract
Semiconductor micro-lasers are regarded as a promising ultra-compact light source for integration with the unique advantages of ultralow energy consumption and small footprint for various applications such as Lidar, VR/AR glasses, 3D imaging, etc. However, the monolithic integration of III-V micro-lasers with Si substrates remains challenging due to the large material dissimilarities between III-V compounds and group IV materials.
In the past decade, groups from Intel, UCSB, HKUST, UCL, CNRS, etc. have made progress in millimeter-sized lasers directly grown on Si (001) substrates. However, there’re very few reports on micro-lasers and their thresholds were relatively high. Our recent work realized ultra-small lasers monolithically grown on metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible on-axis Si (001) substrates with a…

Archetypal analysis (AA) is an unsupervised learning method that uses a convex polytope to summarize multivariate data. It has been effectively applied to extract extreme patterns of a dataset using self-expressive decomposition.
In this talk, we will first prove a consistency result for AA under appropriate statistical assumptions and obtain the convergence rate of the optimal objective values as the sample size tends to infinity. Then we will talk about two dimensionality reduction techniques to reduce…
