About MSc. CE

Master of Science in Communications Engineering (MSc. CE) is a two-year full-time programme offered by CUHK-Shenzhen revolving around the area of communication engineering. The Programme aims to equip students with essential knowledge and skills that enable them to develop and implement solutions to harvesting, transmission, and processing of data and information, with a wide coverage of emerging technology such as 5G and beyond communications and networks, wireless communications, machine learning, Internet of Things, cloud computing, edge computing, big data, and analytic processing.

▲ Study Mode: Full-time

▲ Language: English

▲ Study Period: 2 years (normative); 3 years (maximum)

▲ Minimum Units Required: 39 units in two academic years

▲ Degree: M.Sc., CUHK

Programme Objectives

Recent advancements in communications technologies such as 5G, optical communications, IoT, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, are reshaping every aspect of commerce, industry, and society. Information and communication technology is also a fast-growing industry in China. There is thus a rapidly growing demand for talented professionals with specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities in communications engineering.

The Master of Science in Communications Engineering Programme aims to educate professionals with both theory and practice of communications engineering. Students who graduate from this two-year Master’s Programme will learn the fundamental theory and cutting-edge methods of communications engineering over a wide range of emerging topics such as 5G and beyond communications and networks, Internet of Things (IoT), and machine learning. Students will also complete research projects demonstrating that they can use the fundamental concepts to solve problems in various communications applications.

Programme Highlights

  1. Faculty: The faculty of MSc. CE, including several IEEE Fellows, have all studied or taught in internationally renowned universities. Therefore, students are allowed to access research guidance from leading international scholars.
  2. Further study opportunities: MSc. CE graduates can apply directly to the Ph.D. Programme in Computer & Information Engineering, SSE, CUHK-Shenzhen.
  3. Overseas exchanges: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen has partnered with more than 100 of the world's leading universities to provide a variety of overseas exchange opportunities.
  4. Geographic advantages: Located in Shenzhen, a hub of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the programme provides rich internship opportunities with Huawei, Tencent, Ping An, DJI, and other well-known enterprises.

Study Environment

The School of Science and Engineering (SSE), as a partner of many of the world's leading universities, is renowned for its unique combination of Chinese and Western learning environments that cater to international academic trends. It is also home to a global team of top-notch scholars, including multiple Turing Award winners, Fields Medalists, members of multiple academies of science/engineering, and senior scholars from prestigious universities at home and abroad.

The combination of classroom teaching and mentorship brings teachers and students closer together, giving students more opportunities to communicate with their mentors and develop teamwork skills among their peers. Moreover, SEE is a designated recipient of government funds for various key research projects, and has several college-enterprise joint labs, including CUHK(SZ)-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence, and CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab. The all-around in-depth cooperation between the University and enterprises creates a favorable atmosphere that connects industries, education, research, and rich resources for students.
