Many years ago, Professor Shiping Zhu wrote the words. Recently, Professor Wing-wah Chan composed the music.

ChE is a discipline that studies production and processing of materials and chemicals. It has two foundations: reaction engineering and separation engineering, and it deals with three fundamental questions: how far, how fast, how to in both reaction and separation.

The Ode introduces ChE main courses and basic concepts: thermodynamics (enthalpy, entropy), kinetics and catalysis (activation), mass transfer (Fick’s law), heat transfer (Fourier’s law), fluid mechanics (Navier-Stokes equation). A humanistic interpretation is provided to each of the concepts.

The Ode also gives major areas that ChE plays a critical role: food, daily chemical products, energy, environment, materials, pharmaceutical.

Indeed, without ChE, the earth cannot support eight billion people. Without ChE, we can’t have a normal daily life as we enjoy today.

The Ode is dedicated to all the people who have made ChE such a wonderful discipline.
