In Memory of Our Dear Professor Hark
With deep grief, we are here to announce the passing of Prof. Hark, Sui Kong, Emeritus Professor of School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Prof. Hark passed away on April 6th, 2024 in Hong Kong, surrounded by his loved ones after a battle of illness, at the age of 73.
Prof. Hark graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1975, and obtained his PhD Degree in Physics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981. Five years later, he returned to his alma mater, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as a lecturer in the Department of Physics. From lecturer to Professor, and then to retirement, he taught at CUHK for a total of 23 years.
Prof. Hark accepted the invitation and joined School of Science and Engineering, CUHK-Shenzhen on November 17th, 2014. Before that, he had been working on many planning projects of SSE, including faculty recruitment, laboratory establishment, course design, etc. As one of the first group of professors to come to this university, he worked diligently during the founding period of SSE. He served as an important member of various committees of SSE, as well as the Director of Registry Office.
During his time in the University, Prof. Hark never ceased his work on research and teaching. He designed and taught three courses, including PHY1002 Physics Laboratory, EIE2001 Basic Circuit Theory and GEB2002 Introduction to Astronomy. In his spare time, he also led the English Club for freshmen and served as an Academic Advisor for students of all grades. In addition, he was a reviewer and editorial board member of several journals, including Journal of Semiconductors and The Journal of Light Scattering, etc.
Known for his modesty and selflessness, Prof. Hark dedicated a lot for the development and talent cultivation of SSE, and was deeply respected by colleagues and students. He strived for excellence in teaching and designed professional courses in accordance with the high standard. He was amiable to students and would patiently answer any questions from them. He had devoted much effort to build the faculty team of SSE.
We will always remember Prof. Hark, as an outstanding scholar, teacher and colleague. May he rest in peace, under the starry sky he loved most.
In compliance with Prof. Hark’s will and the wishes of his family, the funeral will be kept simple and private. We would like to express our sincere condolences by this obituary.
