MPhil-PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary program involving the application of Engineering principles and design concepts on Biology and Medicine for healthcare purposes, such as diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy of diseases. The primary mission of our BME program is to cultivate students with the cross-disciplinary expertise in biology, medicine, and engineering fields. The discipline of biomedical engineering aims to cultivate talented researchers with 1) a positive spirit and a responsible quality of good professional ethics; 2) basic knowledge and basic skills in medical electronics, medical materials, medical devices and medical big data processing, and be able to engage in biomedical engineering, Engineering and technical talents and leaders in the design, manufacture and application of biomaterials and medical devices; 3) Good at understanding and grasping the frontier development of biomedical engineering disciplines, with the ability to innovate in technology, apply biomedical engineering and solve practical problems; 4) Have Strong ability to acquire and apply new knowledge, academic communication ability, ability to cooperate with others and adapt to environmental changes.

Notes:
- Maximum period to pass the candidacy requirement, counted from first entry.
- A student who fails to pass the candidacy requirement within the maximum pre-candidacy period is required to withdraw from PhD study.
- A student without a master's degree who fails to pass the candidacy requirement within the maximum pre-candidacy period is allowed to switch to MPhil study.
Credit Requirements
For MPhil students, minimum of 18 units are required from the list of lecture courses as below, with at least 12 units to be selected from Group A, and some units are required from thesis research courses.
For PhD students, minimum of 27 units are required from the list of lecture courses as below, with at least 18 units to be selected from Group A, and some units are required from thesis research courses.
For all graduate students (applicable to all students with Chinese nationality, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents) admitted in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen in 2021-22 and thereafter, Civic Education (CE) courses are required.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition for both M.Phil. and Ph.D. students is RMB115,000 per year. CUHK-Shenzhen may offer various kinds of financial supports to selected applicants:

Each fellowship and scholarship will be offered for a duration of up to 4 years, subject to annual review. Fellowships and PGS scholarships are available to all applicants. The selection is based on merit and no separate application is required.

- For both PhD and MPhil programme, there might be an interview administered by the programme.
Application Requirements
For the PhD Stream, applicants should have:
(i) a Master's degree from recognized university category A, 985, 211 for domestic university; or
(ii) graduated from recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or equivalent; or
(iii) graduated from an honours programme of recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of GPA≥3.2/4.0 or equivalent;
(iv) completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
(v) fulfilled the 'English Language Proficiency Requirement':
The applicant should either:
· possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam. (AS Level)
Hong Kong Higher Level Exam.
CUHK Matriculation Exam., or
· achieve Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination; or
· have a degree from CUHK(SZ), or recognized university with English as teaching language, or
· submit one of the following original score reports/certificates for assessment by the Programme concerned:
TOEFL* (not lower than 550 paper-based; 213 computer-based; and 79 internet-based)
GMAT (Verbal, not lower than 21)
IELTS (Academic) (not lower than Band 6.5
* Due to COVID-19 pandemic, subject to the University’s approval, the University accepts, on a temporary basis and for those students who are admitted to postgraduate programmes in the 2023-24 intake, the following online English tests as an alternative to fulfil the University’s English Language Requirements.
