Electronic Information Engineering

Nowadays, computers, information and communication technologies have become the main driving force for China’s economic development. As a result, new Internet-related products and services (online banking, online transactions, etc.) are booming. As one of the four central cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen is one of the most dynamic bases for China’s communications, electronic information and computer industries. The city is in urgent needs of computer and electronic information engineering technical talents with an international perspective to promote the development of a new generation of information technology to support the future development of the city.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) is committed to establishing a world-class education and scientific research center and is determined to carry out international frontier research in the fields of information, big data, new energy, international finance and logistics. In order to achieve this goal, we will recruit first-class scholars globally, develop cross-disciplinary courses and establish advanced teaching and research facilities. Electronic Information Engineering is a cutting-edge program that teaches the basic knowledge and skills of electronic information and computer engineering. Students will also have many opportunities to communicate and learn with world-renowned professors and leading industry practitioners inside and outside the classroom.

1.Training Objectives
To cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents with international vision, the EIE program is designed to teach its students modern electronic technology, the principles and practice of computer engineering, information transmission and storage, signal processing and analysis, prototype development and technology transfer to commercial products. The well-rounded education will enable graduates of this major to further their graduate studies at domestic and foreign graduate schools, as well as practice their profession in the industry such as computers, electronics, information, finance, manufacturing and government agency management.

2.Stream Specialty
School-packaged courses: Comprehensive basic science and engineering subjects training, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics. Students can choose to study in the direction of Electronic Engineering (EE) or Computer Engineering (CE) according to their own interests. EIE4900 (Final Year Project) is added to the major required courses to help students gain practical experience and prepare them for their future career development.

A.Computer Engineering
Computer Engineering focuses on the practice and application of computer systems. Its main areas cover cloud computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, computer networks, image processing and computer vision, computer-aided design, computer system security, embedded computer systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Major required courses include Programming Paradigms (C++), Data Structures, Computer Structures, Operating Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Decentralized and Parallel Processing, Digital Logic and System Design Experiments, Microprocessor and Computer System Design Experiments, and Final Year Project.

B.Electrical Engineering
Major required courses for Electrical Engineering stream mainly include Circuit Theory and Experiment, Digital Logic and System and Experiment, Signal and System, Computer Structure, Data Structure, Microcomputer System and Experiment, and Final Year Project. Through extensive hands-on training, students can develop in various fields in the future including wireless communications, integrated circuits, signal processing and robotics and so on.
EIE major program will take advantages of the local industry in the Internet, Communications and other Electronic information areas to provide students with ample opportunities to interact with the local industry, which helps our students to better understand the industry trends and be equipped with entrepreneurship ability. Electronic Information Engineering graduates will acquire professional knowledge and skills that will enable their long-term development in the broad field of Electronic Information.

Computer Science and Engineering

Computer Science and Engineering is the core subject in the information age. It is also one of the fields that span across disciplinary boundaries and have found wide applications. China has made remarkable progress in the past decade, and information and communication technology has been the main driving force of its economic development. Computers have now permeated into all sectors and aspects of society and have been used in industry, commerce, finance, military, science and technology, education, media, entertainment, etc. With the advancement of computerization, the demand for computer scientists will become increasingly prominent. This is especially true in the Pearl River Delta area, where Computer Science and Engineering graduates with a world vision will be in very high demand in many industries.

CUHK (SZ) strives to become a world-class teaching and research institute, and is committed to carrying out cutting-edge research in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering. To realize this goal, staff of high-calibre has been globally recruited, curricula carefully designed, and campus facility purposely built.Students will have ample opportunities to interact with the teachers/researchers in classrooms and in research labs, although this programme mainly focuses on basic knowledge and skills.

New Energy Science and Engineering

With the scientific and technological progress and further development of energy, how to promote clean and efficient use of energy, improve the comprehensive efficiency of energy, and accelerate the opening of energy market and industry upgrading have become the new concerns of energy field. Meanwhile, interconnected technologies are changing the social mode of operation. Therefore, the academia has proposed to “build a smarter planet”, and projects it into the energy area, creating the cutting-edge notion, “smart energy”. It deeply merges internet with energy production, transmission, storage, consumption as well as energy market.

This trans-disciplinary program aims to explore “smart energy system”, the emerging new form of energy development. It combines the traditional training of physics and materials science with modern element of biological engineering, photochemistry and electrochemistry. Apart from new energy courses, Basic Circuit Theory, Signals and Systems, and more advanced Statistics courses are also included. It integrates new energy study to data computation technique so that students could balance the training between energy and internet technique required by the smart energy system, and adapt the needs for energy-oriented composite talents in current job market.

The School is now actively cooperating with well-known overseas universities in designing “3+1+1” Joint Program of NSE. The program is also set with Final Year Project that is determined to train students’ independent hands-on and researching abilities, which will greatly help them get ready for further study or career. Graduates of NSE will be able to work in the emerging smart energy system area including “smart grid”, or engage in the energy research in universities and institutes. “Smart Energy System” is the main manifestation of “Internet +” smart energy promoted in China. Thus, with broad prospects, this field is in urgent needs of scientists and engineers with interdisciplinary skills of Internet and energy.

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

Knowledge of mathematics is essential to all scientists and engineers - it is the language with which we formulate theories and natural laws and express our ideas. The programme is designed to educate students to acquire both a solid understanding of mathematics and the ability to use it. In addition to fundamental mathematical theory, students will be trained in applying mathematical modeling and computational methods to formulate and solve practical problems arising in business, finance, government, engineering, physical science, life science, and social science.

Students in the first two years will take courses in basic mathematics and general areas of science and engineering. In the third and fourth years, students will study specialized courses in the streams they have chosen. Certain advanced courses on the frontiers of mathematics will also be offered to those students who wish to broaden their knowledge or are planning to continue their studies in other subfields of mathematics.

The programme provides students with three streams of concentration:

1) Pure Mathematics

2) Applied Mathematics

3) Financial Mathematics

The emphasis of the programme will initially be more on the applied side of mathematics, however a stream of concentration in Pure Mathematics will also be offered to those students who aim to become theoretical mathematicians. Also, the programme will have a stream in financial mathematics, which is becoming increasingly important, considering in particular the large demand for talents with such knowledge in Shenzhen – one of the country’s financial centers.

Statistics

Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis and interpretation of data to obtain information and support decision-making. It has been widely applied in many fields, including from biology, medicine, and engineering to psychology, accounting, finance and government policy. With the development of sensing, communication, and computing technologies, data gathering becomes more convenient and economical than ever, so that massive compilations of data have emerged in all kinds of areas. Through appropriate modeling and analysis, Big Data can effectively promote inference, estimation, tracking, learning and decision making. However, Big Data is so huge and complex that it also brings new challenges besides opportunities. Hence, graduates equipped with a solid training in statistical and computing skills will play a key role in solving various statistical problems, especially the Big Data challenges. They will be sought-after by employers and will likely contribute to the modern economy in a significant way.

To meet the rising demand for well-trained Statistics graduates in the information age, the programme’s curriculum is designed to encompass the core subjects of the field, while maintaining a balance between theory and practice. Topics covered include the foundations of statistics, computing and data management, statistical theories and methods, and statistical applications in business, finance, medicine, actuarial science, quality control and risk management science.

The Statistics programme provides three streams for the students to choose, which are:

3) Statistical Science

The graduates in Statistics are capable to work and succeed in the business world and government agencies, as well as go to graduate school for further studies in the fields of science, engineering, and business administration.

Financial Engineering(Offered Jointly with the SME)

The programme is set up to meet the finance industry’s demand for graduates with strong quantitative and analytical skills who have the potential to become leaders in the finance industry. Graduates are equipped with sound financial modeling and forecasting skills, and are ideally suited to positions and tasks that require strong quantitative and analytical skills such as valuation, portfolio analysis, asset allocation, credit analysis, risk modeling, and structured finance. The programme also provides a good foundation for careers in investment banking, commercial and corporate banking and financial services.
