Biography

Dr. Chenye Wu is currently an assitant professor and the presidential young fellow at the School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Dr. Wu received his bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University in 2009 and his Ph.D. degree in computer science and engineering from Tsinghua University in 2013, advised by Prof. Andrew Yao, the Turing Award Laurant. Dr. Wu's research interests span from power system control to the electricity market design, emphasizing the emerging business model design for the energy sector, the market power analysis for the electricity market, the AI-driven power system control and operation. Dr. Wu has published over 70 research articles in top journals and leading conferences in the field, including IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, ACM e-Energy. He is a member of the FinTech special interest group, China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and a member of the special interest group, China Energy Society. Dr. Wu has been an Editorial Board Member for IEEE Systems Journal as an Associate Editor since February 2022. He is the symposium co-Chair for IEEE SmartGridComm 2022 and the digital conference co-Chair for ACM e-Energy 2022. Dr. Wu is the co-recipients of the three best paper awards, including the best paper award for IEEE SmartGridComm 2012 and IEEE PES General Meeting 2013 and 2020.

 

Research Interests

1. Pricing Mechanism and Business Model Design for the Future Electricity Market

Pricing for the wholesale electricity market depends on the cost of the generating units, including fixed startup costs and variable fuel costs. To mitigate the impact of high penetration of renewable energy on the reliable operation of the power grid, market operators need to frequently startup and shut down generating units. This results in recurring fixed costs, blurring the boundary between fixed and variable costs and making the system-level power generation cost non-convex. To this end, how should we design the wholesale electricity price effectively in the future? What regulatory challenges will arise? Can new business models be devised to improve market efficiency using new market ingredients such as demand-side response, electric vehicles, and energy storage?

 

2. Data Driven Analytics for the Carbon-related Financial Instruments

In the context of carbon neutrality, the future electricity market will be closely coupled with the carbon market. The physical constraints already make the electricity market highly susceptible to manipulation. The inconsistency between the electricity market and the carbon market will make the situation even worse. Is it possible to design financial instruments that connect the two markets and eliminate the market loopholes? Is it possible to use existing financial derivatives or design new derivatives to enhance the liquidity of the two markets, thereby enhancing competitiveness and efficiency?

On the other hand, in the future data era, how to protect individual privacy in data sharing? How to price data? These issues are also among the core focuses of our research team.

 

3. AI-Powered Electricity Grid Control and Operation

Artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies have profoundly changed our lives, not yet for the power grid. The core reason is the pursuit of stability in the power system operation. Specifically, AI and data-driven techniques are very good at handling trained situations and very unstable in untrained situations. Therefore, most of the current AI applications in the energy sector are to aid decision-making. How to further improve the ability of AI to assist decision-making and ultimately lead to an AI-powered grid?
