Shiu-Yuen Cheng graduated from the United College, CUHK, in 1970. He wrote a PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. S.S. Chern at UC Berkeley in 1974. He then taught at Courant Institute and Princeton University before moving to UCLA. He was a tenured professor at UCLA from 1981 to 1998. He assumed the post of Department Head and Professor at HKUST in 1996. He served as Dean of Science of HKUST from 2004 to 2010, and Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs at HKUST from February to August, 2010. In 2013, he moved to the Yau Mathematical Science Center (YMSC) and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tsinghua University. He served as Associate Director of YMSC from 2017 to 2023. Since May 2023, Shiu-Yuen Cheng assumed the post of College Master of Minerva College at CUHK(SZ).

Shiu-Yuen Cheng was awarded the Sloan Fellowship in 1977. He was an invited 45-minutes speaker at ICM, Warsaw 1983, and an invited panel discussion member at ICM, Madrid 2006. He was awarded the Chern Prize at ICCM, Hangzhou 2007, and Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, 2013. In 2017, he received the award of Honorary Fellow of HKUST. He has served as President of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society from 1998 to 2002.
